Industrial pollution is defined as the pollution that originates directly from industries. This form of pollution is one of the most common sources of pollution around the world. Industrial projects are a main cause of pollutants in the air, water, and land.
Industries are responsible for three types of pollution:
(a) Air pollution
(b) Water pollution
(c)Land pollution
Air pollution is caused by the presence of harmful gases , such as sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide which are released by the industries . These pollutants can cause health problems and can also harm the environment . The industries which cause air pollution in India are chemical, textile, cement, steel, etc.
Fossil fuel industries are known as the largest air polluting industries and accounts for over 75% of Global greenhouse gas emissions .
Toxic gas leaks can be very hazardous with long term effects.
Water pollution is caused by industrial wastes and affluents when released into rivers, lakes and oceans such as oil, hazardous substance, and other harmful liquids. This causes a huge damage to the environment.
Fly ash, phospo-gypsum and iron and steel slags are the major solid wastes in India
Effects of water pollution:
Depletes aquatic ecosystems
Lack of drinking water
Land pollution is caused when the industries dump wastes and leave it open. This makes the land useless. The common source of soil pollution is when the industrial wastes are disposed into the soil.
Fashion industry is known as the largest land polluting industry.
Effects of soil pollution:
Damage to health.
Poorer harvests.
Climate change
Economic impact , etc.
The Bhopal gas tragedy . More than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal which immediately killed at least 3800 people and morbidity for many thousand more.
One of the industrial incidents which caused a huge damage to the environment and the organisms living around it is the BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY .
